Organizing Computer Files

Last week on TBA, we had a discussion about organizing files and ideas that we find on all these great blogs.

Here is what I shared with them...

Here is how I have been organizing awesome things I find on blogs (although it's still not perfect and still gives me headaches!)

When I see a cute activity or worksheet that is provided in PDF, I save it right away! I have several files on my personal computer and have them organized by season, subject and whether its a whole group activity or center activity. This way, when I'm looking for a math game for the summer I know exactly where to look! Saving files on google docs just confuses me, but I have heard that it works wonders for others!

This is what my files look like:
Most of the things I find on blogs are saved under "activities", "classroom management" and "classroom organization"
These are all the files I have saved under "activities"
This is an example of how I organize the math activities.

To save awesome ideas, I use Pinterest. I came across this website by accident, and holy moly, it's AWESOME! You have to be invited to join it, but it only took like 3 days before I got my invitation to join. It's so cool because you can make different boards (I have one for classroom ideas, summer school, cute crafts, etc.) and then you can "pin" a picture and give it a brief description. Pinterest automatically links it back to the source it came from, and it's also a great way to give credit to other people's things. Here is the link to Pinterest and here is an example of my boards.

I'm still having a hard time organizing the hard copies of all of my things and I get too overwhelmed thinking about it, so that's for another day!

Hope this helps!

  1. I love this post! It always helps me to see how others organize their things whether electronic or hard copies. Thank you!

  2. I just signed up for Pinterest! Can't wait to check it out! I have a similar organization on my computer at home. My hard copies are sorted in my filing cabinet in folders in the order I teach them through the year (Alphabet, Bears, Seasons, Dr. Seuss, etc.) These take up two drawers. I have a third drawer that is Monthly/holidays/ that can cover a variety of grades if we have buddy activities . In here is where I keep Mother's Day, Groundhog Day, Flag day, etc activities. My Math hard copies are in a 4th drawer by topic in the order we teach. I do have two more drawers for my 2nd grade materials I refuse to get rid of with Book Questions and writing topics. Hope this helps you with ideas!

  3. How did I miss the discussion on TBA about this? Thanks for sharing all your ideas. You look much more organized than me! I'm off to check out Pinterest now!

  4. Hi,

I am new at blogging and am so unsure of how to start.....connecting with others.....sharing my documents (PDF or google docs) and how often to blog?

Would love any tips you have as I see your blog is super cute!
