Coin Caterpillars

Have you seen this adorable Coin Caterpillar that I pinned?

It was my "pinspiration" for this activity!

We've been practicing singing the value of our coins every morning and practicing adding the values together. I use my large magnetic money coins, place a few on the whiteboard and my kiddos write down the total on a post it. They LOVE it!

Now they will use what we've been practicing to find the value of each caterpillar! I also think that I will have my students use the coin manipulatives to place over each coin to help them with the color and the value.

Download your copy for free and let me know if you use it in your class!

these are so cute, thanks for sharing! Are you all adopting the Common Core Standards this year? Our district is and money is no longer a K standard- it's moved to 2nd grade. I still plan on introducing it bc it's such an important skill. My kids in the past have just counted pennies, they're not quite ready to add the different sums together.

My son just got done with a summer math camp where the teacher suggested we work more on counting coins. Your activity is so clever, very cute, and perfectly timed. Thank you for the free download!!

Love this! We don't introduce the quarter until late in the year, but I would love to use this as a center activity where the kids create their own caterpillars and then record it and the total onto a sheet. Would you mind if I tweeked this activity to fit that?

Super Cute! I will definitely use this activity later in the year! We do something similar when counting by 2/5/10. Each student traces a circle counter as many times as they'd like to make a caterpillar. Inside the circles, they must count on; then I have them decorate it! Thanks for sharing!

I used this idea with my 2nd graders this year. Our math workbooks come with tons of itty bitty paper coins that are too small for anything else! We made insects and added up the totals. They were pretty amazing!

Hi I was a former Kindergarten teacher and now am home with my kids. I love to read your blog and keep up with what is going on. I was wondering what are the songs you sing for money?
Thanks so much,
Caterina

These are cute- I have coin stickers I bought and have been hoarding for a while... this would be perfect to do with them! I could give each kiddo a few and let them arrange them into a caterpillar and write the amount!

This is super cute for my second graders. We too are adopting the core standards. We are very concerned that coins aren't introduced till second grade. We second grade teachers feel that it would be very helpful if kinder and first grade teachers would still intro and play around with money, it would surely help the 2nd, 3rd, and older kids.
