Blog Swap: Kreative in Kindergarten

Welcome to the blog swap and hop! I'm excited to have Crystal here today!! After you've read her amazing post, come see me over at Heidi Samuelson's blog, Swamp Frog First Graders!
Greetings teacher friends! I am so glad to be guest blogging on one of my favorite blogs. I puffy heart love Hadar!

Let’s be honestsometimes our classrooms look like the animals in the zoo, a car of clowns from the circus, or a sold out PG movieyes we put the FUN in dysFUNctional.  I thought I would share with you some of my favorite classroom management ideas and pinspiring pics!

Star Jar: I am always telling my class “I am looking for a shining star.” This is my version of a treasure box. I just bought a glass cookie jar from Target (love) and filled it will all kinds of goodies. It’s like telling kids they get a Happy Meal (because they want the toyright?).

Sweet Treats: I realize that many schools don’t allow candy anymore and I don’t necessarily agree with sugaring kids up. I think it’s a good rule. I keep this small glass jar, also from Target, filled with seasonal sweets. For example during October, I will fill it with candy corn. It always amazes me what a child will do for ONE m&m or ONE candy heart. I always get compliments on how clean my room is and it costs me about three m&m’s a day.

Treasure Box: I have a very small metal tin in the shape of a treasure box. I keep it filled with all kinds of stickers. I buy the stickers out of the dentist magazines, the big square ones. Oh, they feel beyond special when they get a princess or superman sticker.  If they get to go to the treasure box, the get to choose one sticker.

Swell Smell: I buy different flavors of chapstick and try and keep one in my pocket. This works great especially for in the hall. I will tell them to put their hand on their head and rub the chapstick on their hand so they can smell it. It's always great to stock up on these during the after Christmas sales because they have tons at WalMart for stocking stuffers for the holidays. The kids LOVE them!

Green Fish Lunch: At our school, we "flip fish" when kids are in trouble. If you go the entire six weeks without flipping more than one green fish (because everyone has a bad day), you get to have lunch with me in the classroom while we enjoy a movie. The kids can't wait for this! They really don’t even talk to me during this lunch. It’s just cool to sit in our room and watch Magic School Bus while other kids are in the lunch room. Next year we aren’t doing fish, but we will figure out a way to keep this tradition going.  For some kids, it works.
Here are a few PINTEREST inspired classroom management ideas! I plan on trying a few this year!

I always “bless” my students with stickers and treasures on a whim. I think that keeps them on their toes. For the upcoming school year, I am going to try out a clip chart. I have never done this before but I am excited...I think. EE K! Though, I am not sure how the moving up and down thing will work. What if they have moved up and then they are REALLY naughty? Do you move them back every day?  This teacher needs to be schooled on this! Haha!

Here is a freebie just for sweet little you. It’s a clip chart and I hope you L.O.V.E. love it. If you don’t that is okay too. Thanks for one my favorite blogging buddies, Hadar, for letting me hang out at her blog crib todayand NO I have not been watching MTV during summer break, ehem. J

Here’s hoping you have a great upcoming school year and that it doesn't cost you a million stickers, m&m’s, treasures, or an eye twitch. You laugh but two years ago, I had a kid that gave me an eye twitch. I can’t even say his name. That will break the terms of agreement with the therapist. J J/K

Sending you love and virtual hugs from Kreative in Kinder! Come by and see me. I am the hot mess Kindergarten teacher with the pink polka dots on the side. J

Hot Seat!

Have you heard of the game Hot Seat? I learned it a few years ago from a first grade teacher I worked with and introduced it to my first graders this week. We played it when we had an extra 5 or 10 minutes during our last week of school {side note: finally!!!} and they absolutely loved it!

Here's how we played:
One person was chosen to sit in the "hot seat" with their back to the whiteboard, facing the rest of the class.
I then wrote a word on the whiteboard. The students sitting on the carpet had to read it in their minds and not shout it out {that took a few practice rounds ;)}
The object of the game is to get the person in the hot seat to guess the word by giving them clues about the word. For example, I wrote the word "flag" and one student said "ours is red, white and blue". The person in the hot seat has 5 chances to guess the word. I was really impressed with my students' clue giving abilities! They are very smart!

Also, school's out for summer!!!! Yay!!!

To celebrate, I'm throwing a buy one get one free party at my TpT store! Buy one product, get one of equal or lesser value FREE! All you need to do is email me with your TpT username, what product you purchased and which you would like free.

It's True!

Last year I was so excited, I posted about this great trick I learned on how to erase permanent marker! It was pretty much the coolest thing ever!

Well, shortly after, I saw a post from The Teacher Wife sharing how she erases permanent marker from her whiteboard. So I decided to give it a whirl while erasing names from our job chart.

I wrote the name on the shovel after it was laminated.
I drew over the name completely with a dry-erase marker.
 I erased it with a dry-erase eraser.
Ta-da!! Totally worked!

I erased 28 names in less than 10 minutes! Wow!

I was so excited, I had to go tell my teammates. One of them shared that she uses this trick to erase permanent marker off of her students' desks! Genius!!

Measuring Up!

We started our last math unit last week: measurement!

I made a little measuring book {literally, it's a mini-book!} using adorable graphics from Melonheadz.

If you'd like a copy, click {here} to download.
You can print pages 1&2 back to back and 3&4 back to back, cut in half long ways and make a little book.
{Isn't the title font adorable?! It's from the fabulous Michelle at Fabulous in First}

So to start our "new" unit, we read Measuring Penny by Loreen Leedy.
I ordered this book at The Clever School Teacher, which is a spectacular site with tons of children's books!

Then we practiced measuring using both standard and non-standard units.

For our non-standard units, we traced our hands and feet on plain white paper and measured objects around our classroom. My students had the best time measuring how many "feet" were between their desk and the whiteboard.

For our standard measurement, we got to use both inch rulers and centimeter rulers. We measured how long or short objects were around our classroom. Why is using a ruler so much fun!?

Anyway, to wrap up our measurement unit, we made these super cute monkeys by Jaime from What's the Buzz in First. We used the monkey's tail {pipe cleaner} to measure and filled in our data. My kiddos absolutely loved them! You can get your own monkey measurement templates at Jaime's shop for only $1!

We love measuring!
